Curatorial RemarksThis is a study undoubtedly done in a Howard Pyle class where the subject was a costumed model. According to N. C. Wyeth's letters, Thornton Oakley's mother spoke in a broad accent and dropped the "r" in her son's name; Wyeth was probably trying to achieve an approximation of her pronunciation with his misspelling of Thornton. Among his fellow Pyle students, N. C. Wyeth was known as "Losh."
