Curatorial RemarksWyeth's correspondence makes it clear that the present work dates from his 1933 visit to Maine. In September he wrote, "...to-day I'm starting Charlie Stone (he posed all morning) which I will call 'Off Monhegan'" (NCW to Nathaniel and Caroline Wyeth, Sept. 13, 1933, Wyeth Family Archives). Stone was a Port Clyde lobsterman and a friend of Andrew Wyeth. The completed painting is NCW 764.
