Curatorial RemarksThis panel was found in Wyeth's studio. There are no markings or other archival material to suggest the purpose of the work. The panel itself is not the commercially prepared type that Wyeth commonly used. In September, 2008, Andrew Wyeth was shown photographs of the work; while he confirmed that it was indeed by his father, he had no recollection of the purpose of the panel.
The panel probably relates to a piece of paper found in the front endsheets of "War in the Air,"
a book (published in 1941) found in the artist's studio library (NCWS.95.87). Marks on the paper include a quick sketch of what appears to be a calendar layout, with the dimensions given as 15 x 22. Notations in the artist's hand read: Fleet under gorgeous sky / airplanes (formation of 4 (1 illegible word) bombers) over / mountain peaks.
