Curatorial RemarksThis pencil sketch, done on paper about the size of a book illustration, was found in a National Geographic Magazine in the artist's studio (vol. XXXII, nos. 5-6, Nov.-Dec. 1917, NCWS.95.795.22). That issue of the magazine included 16 photographs of Scotland, although none of the images relate specifically this sketch.
The drawing recalls the small, quick sketches that Howard Pyle created as preliminary composition studies. The dating is reflected in the drawing's proximity to The storm on the Firth of Clyde, an illustration for The Scottish Chiefs (NCW 1386),
