Curatorial RemarksEvidence for the existence of this drawing is found in notes from a talk Gertrude Brinckle gave on Howard Pyle in May 1953 at Ursuline Convent, Wilmington. In a section on Howard Pyle's instruction methods, she described the pen and ink sketch club meetings, and spoke about specific drawings by 5 students, Wyeth among them. Wyeth's drawing, she said, was of a "tired mule, kicking in the panels of the hated milk cart he had to drag about." It would seem from the notes that she had the drawing in her possession at the time. An unidentified hand dates the sketch club session to February, 1902, however in a different hand a note reads: No. Thursday, Feb. 4 1904 / According to dates on sketches / at Hist. Soc. of Del. / HPB. (Photocopy of Brinckle's notes in Brokaw collection, BRM library)
