Curatorial RemarksDespite a note by Betsy James Wyeth dating this drawing to 1896-1897, the specific event, the assassination of Kentucky Democrat William J. Goebel after a contentious election for governor, took place on Feb. 3, 1900. Goebel died a day later from the shots, and the drawing must date to about that time. If the drawing was published, a citation has not been located.
