Curatorial RemarksOn the verso of this drawing is a similar composition that has been crossed out. Other drawings of similar subject matter with the same marking ("L.53") and on the same sized sheets are NCW 2246.336, .338, .339 and .340.
The "L.53" in the upper right of this drawing is probably a reference to a locker number used by Wyeth while a student at Mass Normal Art School, according to records now held by Mass College of Art (Courtesy of Paul Dobbs, Archivist, Mass College of Art). Wyeth was enrolled at Mass Normal Art School for the fall semester, 1899 and the spring semester, 1900, accounting for the date of this piece. While a student at Mass Normal, Wyeth took a class called "Perspective."
