Curatorial RemarksBetsy James Wyeth suggested that this work dated from about 1903, however, it is closely related to a more finished painting of the same view (NCW 1281) that was executed over a picture of the barn on the Wyeth property, thus dating the under image to at least 1912.
Both the present work and NCW 1281 depict the same view as another painting, shown in a photograph held in the Wyeth Family Archives. The photo shows a number of landscapes hung in what may be the mill used by the Pyle students during the summer sessions, and used by NCW during the summer of 1907. There is no indication on the photograph whether that work is by N. C. Wyeth.
