Curatorial RemarksThis image is typical of the work Wyeth produced from costumed models as a Howard Pyle student. It relates to a finely wrought charcoal drawing (ca. 1902, private collection) of Pyle's favorite model Weller dressed as a cavalier wearing the same boots and sash, and an oil on canvas painting of a similarly clad pirate carrying a gun, known only by an archival photograph of Wyeth's studio space (filed between letters dated June 29 and July 3, 1903, Wyeth Family Archives). In late June 1903, Wyeth sent to Needham either this painting or the one mentioned above (NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "Received your welcome letter..." and dated in another hand June 25, 1903, Wyeth Family Archives).
