Label Copy: Frank Schoonover began studying with Howard Pyle in 1896 and became a prolific illustrator. Over the course of his career he illustrated a vast array of literary themes, from World War stories and tales of the Old West to pirate lore and space fantasies. Schoonover remained in the region as a professional artist and helped to found the Delaware Art Museum. This painting was created for Harper’s Magazine but was never published. Evidence indicates it may have been intended for Schoonover’s own pirate story, “The Treasure of St. Albans.”
