Teaching his classes in the city of Philadelphia and on the grounds of the Battle of Brandywine, Howard Pyle was very well positioned to take up this topic. He and his students examined the period from all angles, with a wealth of resources on hand. This painting illustrated Henry Cabot Lodge’s The Story of the Revolution, a historical account of the war, which highlighted the transformation of Benedict Arnold from heroic Major General of the Continental Army to the most famous traitor of the Revolution.
