Curatorial RemarksThis scene apparently represents October 8, 1777, during the Battle of Saratoga; that night General Fraser was buried in the redoubt, and the British troops under General Burgoyne, began their retreat northward. Burgoyne surrendered on October 17, 1777; this was considered one of the most decisive victories in American history.
