Curatorial RemarksClayton Douglass Buck (1890-1965) was governor of Delaware from 1929-1937. Preparatory drawings for this portrait are held by the Hunter Museum of American Art (77.7.3, NCW 1501) and the Brandywine River Museum (96.1.517, NCW 2080); the BRM also holds two formal photo-portraits of Buck found in the artist's studio (NCWS.95.1047.1 and .2) and a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.182) made from NCW 1501. There is no suggestion as to why the portrait was unfinished; an official state portrait of Buck was painted in 1966 by J. D. Reeder.
