Curatorial RemarksAlthough it was captioned "Landscape Study," this canvas must have been considered by the artist an important step in his development; he selected it as one of two landscapes to illustrate his article "The Illustrator and His Development." He explained the technique in a letter to Sidney M. Chase (NCW to Sidney Chase, April 19, 1916, WFA, and published in Betsy James Wyeth, ed., The Wyeths, The Letters of N. C. Wyeth, 1882-1945, Boston: Gambit, 1971, p. 523).
