Curatorial RemarksThis painting was called to the attention of Phillips Auctioneers and Appraisers in 1999. Andrew Wyeth recollected that it may have been done for the Coca-Cola Company and Phillips staff confirmed pentimenti suggesting the girl originally held a Coke bottle instead of a book. There is no recorded use of the image in the Coca-Cola Archives. Dating is based on association with other Coca-Cola pictures, particularly NCW 685, NCW 786 and NCW 515.
Phillips staff also wrote "It has been suggested that the work is a portrait of the artist's daughter Anne (sic)" (Sandra Nessim to CBP, March 3, 1999). In a conversation with Christine Podmaniczky (March 8, 1999), Ann Wyeth McCoy was emphatic that she did not pose for this picture.
