Curatorial RemarksThis commission was offered to Wyeth through his New York agent, American Artists Company. American Artists negotiated a contract that paid the artist $1250 for the painting, and retained for him both the original artwork and "calendar rights" should American Artists have been able to sell the image as a calendar picture (American Artists Co. to NCW, Aug. 29, 1945, Wyeth Family Archives).
A private collection includes a finely-drawn pencil study of the head of the main figure, modeled after Ann Wyeth McCoy; the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth collection includes a rough composition sketch, and a study of a head and two arms holding canoe paddles. The Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide of the composition drawing (NCWS.95.1825.190) used in the transfer of the design from paper to panel.
