Curatorial RemarksDealer's notes of an inscription no longer apparent link this painting with its title. "The Captain of the Gray-Horse Troop" by Hamlin Garland was published in serial form between December 14, 1901, and March 29, 1902, in The Saturday Evening Post, with illustrations by C. D. Williams and J. Hambidge. The painting, which accurately depicts an incident near the end of the story, was probably the young Wyeth's attempt to illustrate the work of a popular Western author.
The painting was photographed in 1969, one of approximately 3 dozen paintings from the artist's studio that had been stored unstretched (Brandywine River Museum, catalogue raisonné files).
