Curatorial RemarksThis painting is marked as a sketch in the artist's hand, and does not directly relate to other known oil paintings. Old accession records at the Rose Art Museum indicate that "The Thundering Herd" may have been written on the stretcher. The subject and style of the work are close to a Dec. 1905 Saturday Evening Post cover (NCW 1468), which provides the authority for dating.
