Curatorial RemarksThe painting's association with the Harriburg, PA, 1965 exhibition is based on provenance; it is the only one of three known coasting pictures (NCW 1400 and NCW 1401) that was with the Wyeth family at the time. If the dimensions recorded in the 1965 Harrisburg catalogue are accurate, it would be the only one of the three that is horizontally oriented, a format unsuited to magazine cover work. The Harrisburg catalogue lists the painting as unsigned; the 1970 auction catalogue describes it as signed. The 1970 catalogue also asserts that the locale of the painting is "understood" to be Kuerner's Hill in Chadds Ford, and that the children represented "are those of the artist, with Andrew Wyeth in the foreground." If Andrew Wyeth was indeed the model, that would make the date of execution closer to the later end of the date range.
