Curatorial RemarksThe first owner of this painting, William Shewell Ellis, was a portrait photographer who took photographs of the artist in the mid-teens. (A photo-portrait by Ellis is reproduced on the back cover of David Michaelis's 1998 biography, although erroneously attributed to Sanborn Studios.) There is no authority for the alternate title; the buildings depicted are not the Wyeth homestead.
