Curatorial RemarksThis painting was framed by Wilmington carver Frank Coll in a heavy black and gold "Spanish" style frame which was reproduced in die-cut cardboard for the window display poster (see example, Brandywine River Museum library, # 8912). A "plaque" on the "frame" read: PAINTED FOR / CANADIAN CLUB / BY N. C. WYETH / BLENDED CANADIAN WHISKEY - 90.4 PROOF - IMPORTED BY HIRAM WALKER & SONS INC., PEORIA, ILL. The advertising display, printed by Ketterlinus Lithographic Mfg. Co. of Philadelphia, won Modern Packaging Magazine's 12th annual "All-America Package" competition for window displays.
Two drawings for this commission (NCW 1099 and 1100) are known through archival photographs in the collection of the Brandywine River Museum library (#s 3237 a and b). The museum also holds a press proof of the image set in an alternative display (NCWS.95.6589).
