Curatorial RemarksIn 1895, Scribner's published a multi-volume set of stories by Robert Louis Stevenson in which the edition of David Balfour contained a frontispiece illustration by Howard Pyle. Almost thirty years later, for a new edition of the book N. C. Wyeth chose to illustrate the same scene, several sentences later. Wyeth's home library includes the Pyle-illustrated edition (see NCWS.95.4332.6, Brandywine River Museum); it also includes Scribner's 1905 unillustrated edition of the story (NCWS.95.203) which Wyeth read and marked in preparation for the commission.
