Curatorial RemarksDespite the fact that this painting was exhibited in 1957 as a Winchester rifle advertisement, the firearm has been identified by David A. Kennedy, Robert W. Woodruff Curator, Cody Firearms Museum, as a Remington Model 8 Rifle, the first centerfire semiautomatic rifle made in America, manufactured by Remington Arms between 1906 and 1936. On Feb. 4, 1911, the artist wrote to his parents, "after a week of 'all-fired' hustling on a picture for the Remington people. They made me a present of their wonderful new auto-loading rifle 30-30..." (Wyeth Family Archives)
