Curatorial RemarksThe painting is dated by the inscription on the front and by a note on an archival photograph (Brandywine River Museum library); a second archival photograph carries the notation "Jack McVey N. C. Wyeth" in the artist's hand.
John H. McVey (1853-1939) and his wife Hannah lived in the house on Creek Road south of Chadds Ford at the beginning of the lane to the Wyeth property. (The house is now owned by the Brandywine Conservancy.) "The six-foot six-inch McVey farmed 31 acres, raised honeybees and hunted raccoons," according to a caption under a photograph of McVey published in Around Chadds Ford by Karen Smith Furst (Arcadia, 2005), p. 75.
