Curatorial RemarksIn the February 1919 issue of the Pictorial Review, the reproduction in the upcoming number was advertised with the following: "Kamerad"--Half a dozen Germans to two Americans! Ever hear of Chateau-Thierry? Ever hear of our boys routing a nest of concealed snipers? You can actually see them at it in N. C. Wyeth's powerful painting. The shell-torn sky, the cringing enemy, the cool courage of the two Americans make it a picture of the war you cannot forget."
The Brandywine River Museum holds a proof of this image with the heading and artist's name added in pencil and the text blocks pasted onto the sheet. The color of the proof shows a much redder cast, closer to the actual artwork, than the print that ran in the magazine.
Arthur T. Vance, the first owner of this painting, was the editor of The Pictorial Review from 1907-1930.
