Curatorial RemarksOnly the central portion of this painting was reproduced in 1918, roughly corresponding to the study (NCW 765). A photograph in the 1986 Sotheby's catalogue ("Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture," May 29, 1986) shows more of the image on the right and left sides and gives the width dimension as 72 inches. A comparison of photographs and width measurements indicates that a strip of almost 5 inches was lost from the left edge between 1986 and 2002.
