Curatorial RemarksIt would seem that this commission had been offered first to Frank Schoonover, for Wyeth wrote "I am now working on...an Esquimaux story Schoonover couldn't do" (NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "Enclosed you will find..." and dated in another hand Sept. 14. 1905, Wyeth Family Archives; additional letters dated Sept. 25 and Oct. 1, 1905). According to Schoonover's day book, he did a wax crayon and pencil drawing for the cover illustration between Aug.24-30, 1905 (Courtesy LeeAnn Dean, Research Director, Schoonover Catalogue Raisonne Project).
