Curatorial RemarksAbout this picture Wyeth wrote, "My last illustration is a big burly "outlaw" and a lttle boy fording a raging torrent, the "outlaw" is forging ahead and the boy of 9 years is following him. To paint the boiling stream I'm going to take painting, easel and all down to the Brandywine to-morrow and work directly from nature" (NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "Dear Mama, By the gods!" and dated March 10, 1905 in another hand, Wyeth Family Archives). Judging the set of three pictures, "(they) are the best I ever did from a professional standpoint, that is I believe they are fresher, more spontaneous than any I ever turned out" (NCW to HZW, March 17, 1905, both letters, Wyeth Family Archives). Additional illustrations for this story were provided by Charles Sarka.
