Curatorial RemarksIn his income tax notes for 1939, Wyeth listed "costume (buckskin) $50.00" as one of the major expenses involved in producing this painting--it is not clear whether the fee was for purchase or rental. The Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.166) of the composition drawing used in the transfer of the design from paper to panel.;In his income tax notes for 1939, Wyeth marked "done twice" / "duplicate" above the expenses for Daniel Boone. Analyzing the numbers on the Renaissance panels used for the commission, it is likely that the first Daniel Boone was done on panel number 708. Rejected or damaged, Wyeth repainted Daniel Boone on panel number 715. Panel number 708 was reused several years later for an illustration for Woman's Home Companion (see NCW 707).
