Curatorial RemarksThis drawing is representative of the type of work the artist did as a student before joining the Howard Pyle School. It could have been done during Wyeth's spring semester at Massachusetts Normal Art School (1900) for a class described as "Model, charcoal," or done at the Eric Pape School during the fall 1900 term.
The drawing was one of 16 sold by Nicholas Wyeth in July 1972 to Aldis Brown of New York. Of the 16 drawings, 7 were typical academic figure studies, and may have been done in the same class. See NCW 1528, 1529, 1532, 1561, 1563, and 1567. There are other drawings bearing the same watermark that may be contemporary.
