Curatorial RemarksNo reproduction of this painting has come to light; the horizontal orientation of the composition and the choice of support make it unlikely that the painting is a discarded picture for the Morrell & Company calendar image "Norsemen Sight America's Shores." A related composition drawing (NCW 430) found in the artist's studio in 1976 carried the legend, "Eric the Red Discovers America, 850 AD" (Brandywine River Museum, catalogue raisonne files), and the Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.257) used in the transfer of the design from paper to canvas. Dating is based on when the artist made frequent use of lantern slides.
An undated note in BRM curatorial files must date from prior to 1996. A telephone number associated with the former owner was for the Home Insurance Company.
