Curatorial RemarksBefore coming to Wilmington to study with Howard Pyle, Wyeth painted pictures derived from studies at the Karlstein Polo Grounds in Dedham, Massachusetts.
This could relate to a commission of early 1903. See letter NCW to HZW, dated in another hand Feb. 9, 1908 ("We've had a miserable day...") , "Received the letter enclosed Friday or Sat morning and tell you what I think I'll do. I'll paint a polo picture and send it with a price. I might as well get what I can from him." No further correspondence illuminates this commission.
