Curatorial RemarksAccording to letters, the artist was at work on this image in February, 1904. At that time it was planned as a part of a series of paintings for The Delineator. NCW received $100 for the commission. A letter to his mother dated Feb. 21, 1904, contains a miniature sketch of the composition, and the assertion that the artist had identified closely with every character depicted.
