Curatorial RemarksThis image corresponds in composition to several drawings Wyeth did in late 1944 or early 1945 for a set of calendar images he planned to offer Morrell & Company, which he titled in his correspondence "Swashbucklers in American History." A letter of Dec. 17, 1949, sheds some light on the commission: "Another series for Morrell Company is in the offing, Swashbucklers in American History....close up portrait type of things with brief, telling backgrounds." This composition is identical to two drawings specifically mentioned in the letter, NCW 1866 and NCW 1222. The subject of the present work is not identified.
