Curatorial RemarksIn preparation for this commission, Wyeth read an undated edition of The Scottish Chiefs published by Thomas D. Crowell Company, New York, illustrated with photographs of Scottish scenery (Brandywine River Museum NCWS.95.184). He also had in his studio library the 8 volume "Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments" pulished by Fullerton & Co. of Edinburgh (BRMA, NCWS.95.232.1-.8).
Originally, the painting was probably the same size as most of the other Scottish Chief paintings, approximately 40 x 32 inches. According to Andrew Wyeth, N. C. Wyeth painted additions for each side of this image at the request of the first owner, who wanted the painting to fit a space above a mantle.
The Brandywine River Museum holds the edition of The Scottish Chiefs that Wyeth read in preparation for this commission (NCWS.95.184).
