Curatorial RemarksThis painting was done in conjunction with a second commission the artist received for decorations for the Hotel Roosevelt. On May 10, 1926, he wrote to his father from New York (on Hotel Roosevelt stationary), referring to some sketches he had with him and would show the architect shortly: "they are for a map... and four portraits (imaginary) of Peter Stuyvesant, his wife, Peter Minuet,...and a fourth, a lady yet undecided upon" (NCW to Andrew Newell Wyeth, Wyeth Family Archives). Peter Stuyvesant married Judith Bayard, so the "undecided" lady eventually became Ann, Peter's sister.
