Curatorial RemarksThis commission was placed with the artist in March, 1945, through American Artists Company, for $500. In the correspondence the story is referred to as "A Girl Wants Her Own" (American Artists Company to NCW, March 12, 1945, Wyeth Family Archives). Wyeth was told which incident to picture, and told that the Union soldiers were to be "battle worn and weary," but none suffering "serious wounds."
The Brandywine River Museum holds the composition drawing (NCW 2081, 96.1.550) for this painting.
