Curatorial RemarksThis painting illustrates a passage in a story at the moment when a marksman is about to shoot a tin cup from a man's head. By the time the painting was brought to conservator Joyce Hill Stoner's attention in July 2010, the cup on the figure's head and the signature had been painted out. Stoner determined that the cup was irretrievable and the area was simply toned to match the rest of the background; the signature remains buried under black paint.
