Curatorial RemarksAndrew Wyeth confirmed that his brother Nathaniel was the model for this painting. A study for the painting (NCW 1477) descended in the Wyeth family and is inscribed "Study for / L.H.J. Cover / Nat by NCW." The first owners purchased the painting from an unidentified Boston art exhibition, possibly "the first formal showing of (Wyeth's) work in Boston" (exhibition card, Brandywine River Museum library) at the Boston City Club (Dec. 11, 1922 - Jan. 8, 1923).
