Curatorial RemarksWyeth depicted fisherman John Teel, his wife, and his granddaughter in three paintings done between 1933-34 and 1940. This may have been the first composition in the series. The unfinished nature of the painting and the lack of a signature suggest the artist abandoned the canvas and moved to a second composition (NCW 898) which focused more on the figures.
This canvas or NCW 898 is mentioned in the diary of Mary Edith Hinshaw, a visitor to N. C. Wyeth's studio in the summer 1934 (unpublished but excerpted in "The Window," publication of W. H. Moring, Jr. Arts Center, Asheboro, NC, Fall 1997, vol.1, issue 4).
