Curatorial RemarksAn undated polaroid photograph of this painting, collected by Betsy James Wyeth, bears the inscription on the reverse "Kentucky Derby Club, Louisville, Kentucky." All research to date suggests that this painting was among many destroyed during renovations to Churchill Downs sometime during the 1950s (Lynn S. Renau, to Christine Podmaniczky, Aug. 31, 1993, and Matt Landrus to CBP, July 1, 1993, Brandywine River Museum). The top half of the charcoal composition drawing (NCW 2089) is privately owned; the Brandywine River Museum holds the bottom half of the composition drawing (NCW 2044, 96.1.534) and a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.197) made from the complete drawing that was used in the transfer of the image from paper to painting support.
