Curatorial RemarksNo mention of this painting occurs within Wyeth's correspondence; the date is confirmed by Andrew Wyeth, who distinctly remembered "7 years" between oil and tempera versions. Sylistically the painting is consistent with other compositions from the period 1925-1935, when Wyeth experimented with expressionistic forms.
Watson's article (American Artist) contains an account of the incident depicted in this painting. The Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.248) of a lost composition drawing, and a drawing for "Heidi" (96.1.543, NCW 2068) on the verso of which are five related studies. NCW 365 is a 1942 tempera on hardboard version of the same composition.
