Curatorial RemarksThis is probably the "comprehensive sketch for the cover inlay" that the artist referenced in his Jan. 2, 1936 letter to Ira Rich Kent of Houghton Mifflin Company (Houghton Mifflin Archives, Houghton Library, Harvard University). The Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.106) made from the drawing that was used in the transfer of the design from paper to panel (NCW368).
