Curatorial RemarksThis drawing is representative of the type of work the artist did as a student before joining the Howard Pyle School. It could have been done during Wyeth's spring semester at Massachusetts Normal Art School (1900) for class described as "Model, charcoal," or done at the Eric Pape School during fall 1900.
Illustrator and concept artist Andrew Sonea recognzied this image as a copy of Plate III, no. 20 in the Charles Bargue drawing course. (See http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/, blog entry for March 4, 2017.) Before beginning his school in Boston, Pape studied in Paris with Jean-Leon Gerome, who collaborated with Bargue to establish the course. Pape may have introduced Wyeth to the course.
