Curatorial RemarksThe Brandywine River Museum holds the composition drawing (NCW 2069, 96.1.548) for this commission; a sheet of hand and arm studies (NCW 2285), and a mounted reproduction of the image in black and white that was found among the papers in N. C. Wyeth's studio (NCWS.95.6603).
The image was reproduced on calendars that were printed with the names of companies which distributed the calendars as gifts and advertising. The Brandywine River Museum holds a portion of a cardboard mount with a reproduction of the image (5 15/16 x 8 1/4") adhered along the top edge. Under the image is an area that clearly indicates this "hanger" was used by home insurance companies. Below the image, printed on the mount is the title "Seeking the New Home" and there are remnants of calendar pages for year 1937 (Brandywine River Museum Library #12123). Of the iron ware shown in the painting, the spider (Brandywine River Museum, NCWS.95.1947) and the cauldron (NCWS.95.2053) remain in the artist's studio.
