Curatorial RemarksThe descriptions of the two main characters in "Snake and Hawk" correspond with the figures in the painting. Towards the end of the story, the following description of a room in a prison is given: "A table of carved wood, quite high, very long....a snow of papers on it that glittered like ice in the shine of the four tall candlesticks of silver."
