Curatorial RemarksThe painting is dated by its publication date and similarity with NCW 2121 although it could have been painted several years earlier. Captioned "Landscape Study," it must have been considered by the artist an important step in his development; he selected the work as one of two landscapes to illustrate his article "The Illustrator and His Development." He explained the technique in a letter to Sidney M. Chase (NCW to Sidney Chase, April 19, 1916, WFA, and published in Betsy James Wyeth, ed., The Wyeths, The Letters of N. C. Wyeth, 1882-1945, Boston: Gambit, 1971, p. 523).
