Curatorial RemarksAuthority for the title of this painting rests on an archival photograph annotated on the reverse in the artist's hand, " N. C. WYETH / The Sounding Sea" (collection Brandywine River Museum library). The date is given in the West Chester, PA, 1935(2) exhibition catalogue. The artist's 1939 income tax notes record that the painting was sold to Mrs. Felix du Pont for $1,000; no records at the school record the year of the gift or the name of the donor (Dana Byrd to C. Podmaniczky, 12/15/2004).
