Curatorial RemarksWyeth contributed this cover design to a book of writings and artwork by famous American authors and artists that was compiled as a tribute to and fund raiser for the French Heroes' Fund, a project of Mrs. William Astor Chanler. Chanler and a group of prominent Americans purchased the Chateau Lafayette (NYT, Jan. 1. 1917, p. 9), where, according to the book's foreword by Theodore Roosevelt, "it is intended finally to preserve the original manuscripts of the pieces in this volume." It is not clear that the manuscripts and art work were sent to France. If the original art work for the cover design was included in the deposit, the painting was not among the archives of the Memorial Lafayette transferred to Cornell University.
The plates for all the artwork were engraved by Beck's in Philadelphia.
