Curatorial RemarksThis painting was inventoried in the 1950 Layton book by Betsy James Wyeth, presumably her notes made at a later date. The notation is "Son of His Father / grandma in red dress sitting / in chair outside sewing," indicating that the model was recognized as Carolyn Bockius Wyeth. Since no mention is made of the left side of the painting and no dimensions are given, it is possible that the reference is to only the right side of the printed image.
In 2014, Conservator Joyce Hill Stoner and photographer Jim Schneck examined NCW 964 using IRR techniques. It was clear that NCW 964 covered the side of the painting that depicted the man sitting under the tree. (This confirmed the suspicion based on a photocopy of a photograph associated with NCW 964 with the notation on the reverse: "Son of His Father / Section B / July" with a quick sketch of a male figure.)
